To help gain a clearer picture of the Port Pirie community’s understanding of issues surrounding blood lead, in 2005 Port Pirie Smelter commissioned McGregor Tan Research to undertake several focus groups and surveys with employees and in the community. The research was crucial in understanding what the community, Port Pirie Smelter site management & employees and other stakeholders thought about blood lead and to identify strategies to best engage the community and the Port Pirie Smelter workforce.
As a result of the research, strategies and specific initiatives have been developed and implemented on the Port Pirie Smelter site and in the community. Research information has been incorporated into the Port Pirie Smelter Stakeholder Relations Communication Strategy and is being used to improve communication on the Port Pirie Smelter site and in the community, and to assist in developing initiatives to help achieve the tenby10 project goals.
