Numerous polices to ensure no lead dust leaves the site via the smelters employees and contractors are already in place. These include employees and contractors showering before they leave the site, leaving all works cloths including undergarments and boots on site, and ensuring all vehicles that leave the site do so via a vehicle wash. However workbags that are carried into and out of the Smelter by employees and contractors and then into their home environments may in some cases, have sufficient quantities of lead dust to pose a health risk to their families. Sampling of bags from across all areas of the site was undertaken and indicated that this was an issue in some instances.
One solution was to provide an “over bag” to employees which would allow them to place their own bags inside the “over bag" while on site, significantly reducing the chances of exposure to lead dust. The “over bag” always remains on site and is washed at the end of the 4-day shift/or the working week, or as required.
